This Trust comprises three major sites: Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital in Grimsby, Scunthorpe General Hospital and the Goole and District Hospital. It was formed in 2001 and employs approximately 5,500 staff. It has a catchment area of approximately 410,000 people and focuses on the use of modern technology to support its unified services.
Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital
Based in Grimsby, this hospital is situated on a single site. It was built in 1983 but has undergone considerable expansion since then. The latest developments began in 2004 and comprise a £11.5 million Women and Children’s Unit, a dedicated state-of-the-art Day Case Surgery Unit, new purpose-built Cardiology and Endoscopy Units, a new Diagnostic and Investigation unit, a newly refurbished Breast Unit plus the latest development of a new Orthopaedic Clinic and an Emergency Care Centre.
The hospital has 530 overnight beds of which approximately 223 are designated for all types of surgery, 28 day case beds and 99 maternity beds. It houses the full range of district general services including A&E, medicine, surgery, orthopaedics, paediatrics and obstetrics and gynaecology.
Medical specialities onsite include cardiology (including angiography and permanent pacing facilities), respiratory medicine, elderly care, dermatology, gastroenterology, diabetes and endocrinology and rheumatology. Neurology clinics are provided by clinicians from Hull. Oncology services are provided in the Macmillan suite in conjunction with the Hull and East Yorkshire Cancer network.
All the major diagnostic and service departments are based on site including Ultra Sound and a new MRI Suite.
The Accident and Emergency Department is busy with activity levels reflecting the fact that Cleethorpes, which is two miles from Grimsby, is a holiday resort and therefore experiences a seasonal influx of visitors. The Department is accredited for major trauma.
The theatre suite provides 8 full equipped theatres each with its own anaesthetic room, with two theatres dedicated to orthopaedic use (both with ultra clean air facility). One theatre is dedicated to emergency work, staffed at all times. A separate session for acute trauma cases is reserved each day, including weekends.
There has been a significant investment in new anaesthetic equipment with new anaesthetic machines and new monitoring in both theatres and the recovery ward.
Scunthorpe General Hospital
This district general hospital has undergone considerable expansion and development. It has over 500 beds and has a full range of district general medical and surgical specialities including A&E, critical care, general surgery, urology, orthopaedics, paediatrics and obstetrics and gynaecology.
Medical specialties on site include diabetes and endocrinology, cardiology (with recently opened facilities for cardiac catheterisation and pacing), respiratory medicine, elderly care, genitourinary, dermatology and gastroenterology, stroke unit and rheumatology provided at Scunthorpe by consultants visiting from Grimsby. Neurology, Neurosurgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Plastic Surgery and Renal Medicine are provided by visiting consultants from Hull.
Facilities at Scunthorpe include a new 22 bed medical assessment unit and a new combined day case/planned investigation/discharge unit. There is a full range of endoscopy, CCU and ITU facilities and a modern rehabilitation unit.
The hospital also hosts the Path Links laboratory for Immunology.
Developments in the early years included the construction of four new wards to care for both children and the elderly, a modern psychiatric block, a multi-storey service centre and a new Microbiology Laboratory, a new Accident & Emergency department, Mortuary and Out Patients Department, a new four storey ward block and five theatre complex. More recent developments include a new hydrotherapy pool, extension to the Pathology Laboratory, a new Endoscopy Suite, CT scanner and fracture clinic facilities plus a purpose built Medical Imaging Department incorporating leading edge digital imaging services.
It also has its own purpose built 11 bedded private facility which provides the most up-to-date clinical facilities combined with comfortable and attractive patient accommodation.
Goole and District Hospital
This is a purpose built community-plus hospital which opened in 1988 and brought together services from a number of scattered sites in and around the town of Goole. It has 67 overnight beds. Facilities include beds for general medicine, surgery, ENT, ophthalmology, gynaecology, orthopaedics and medicine for the elderly (83 beds). There is also a surgical day case unit complete with theatre, a main theatre, Out-Patient Department and a minor injuries unit. Internationally renowned specialist laser treatment is provided at Goole in collaboration with the Yorkshire Laser Centre.
A treatment centre was established at Goole Hospital in 2003 and this development has brought the total number of theatres to four, two equipped for major orthopaedic work and other types of surgery, one well equipped day unit with its own theatre and an ophthalmic suite and theatre.
There are two x-ray rooms together with mobile units, OPT and an ultrasound room.
