Assist in the provision of an effective Emergency Medicine service in collaboration with colleagues.

Maintain clinically responsibility to the Consultants for the reception, resuscitation, diagnosis and initial treatment of all emergencies in the main Emergency Department. Referral of patients to in-patient specialties for admission or to other specialist units (including in other hospitals) or GPs. Unscheduled returns will be seen by Specialty doctors including this post holder.

Maintain clear, contemporaneous notes which are dated, timed and contain both your signature and printed name.

Take part in major incidents according to the Trust Major Incident Policy.

Liaise with the nursing shift manager and other nursing staff to organise the allocation of work and ensure the smooth running of the department.

The department is open continuously for both ambulance and walk-in cases. It serves a population of around 270,000, which is greater than the “nominal” population due to the location of the hospital and the presence of major transport links.

There are approximately 80,000 attendances per annum of which 75,000 are new patients. 25% of the patients are paediatric (under 16 years). There are approximately 8,000 emergency admissions per annum, 50% of which are GP referrals. All acute referrals come through either the Emergency Department or the Emergency Assessment Unit (EAU) for assessment, resuscitation and nursing care.
