Job summary
The East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust is situated in North East Lancashire within easy reach, by our excellent motorway links, of Manchester, Leeds and Liverpool. This Trust has been formed by the merger of Burnley Health Care NHS Trust and Blackburn, Hyndburn and Ribble Valley NHS Trust in April 2003.
The work of the Emergency Department
The Department is a 24 hour major unit receiving and managing emergency cases across the spectrum of medicine and surgery adults and paediatrics. Approximately 140,000 new cases were seen across the ED & UCC’s with a further 4-5% return attendance. A comprehensive communication service is maintained with general practitioners in the district and with other departments in the Hospital.
The Senior Clinical Fellow will be rotating between the Royal Blackburn Hospital & BGH. They will be expected to liaise with colleagues from related and other specialities and disciplines on the care of individual patients. He /She will be working in the ED & UCC’s.
Managerially the department is part of a wider structure includes Acute Medicine, MAU, ED & UCC’s Medicine Anaesthetics and Critical care. There is a trust wide associate clinical operation director for emergency medicine at a trust level, at local level there are 2 Matrons & a Business Manager.
A Medical Assessment unit has been established by the Trust for the Reception of patients referred from the ED & UCC’s department. A Medical Admissions Unit receives G.P. referred patients. G.P. referrals to other specialties ordinarily are directed straight to the ward.
Duties of post
To provide, at a level of expertise, appropriate to a practitioner who has undergone a full programme of post-graduate training, the experience necessary for the primary management of Emergency cases. He/She will be required to work with the Senior House Officers in the management of the department workload as it presents. He/She will also be expected to provide a certain degree of supervision to the Senior House Officer and Emergency Nurse Practitioners.
In exceptional circumstances, additional duties outside normal rostered hours may be required, essential to the continuation of patient care.
The post holder undertakes, exceptionally, to perform additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.
The postholder will be expected to undertake full clinical duties mostly involving immediate care of patients attending the Emergency Department with emergencies and injuries both major and minor. The care will include initial resuscitation where appropriate, diagnosis management and treatment and referral and discharge under the guidance of the Consultants. The referral could be to G.P.’s, appropriate specialist team for continued hospital care or other services.
He/She will be expected to follow the various guidelines and protocols issued in the department from time to time. He/She will also be expected to work alongside the Senior House Officers.
A mentoring process will be in place to make sure that the professional and personal development of the postholder are maintained. The Consultants will act as mentors who will meet with the postholder on a regular basis.
